Running And Walking This Weekend

Two great events await runners and walkers this weekend in the greater Sacramento area. Temperatures are scheduled to dip into the mild 60's, providing excellent running/walking conditions.

On Saturday, March 27th, join us for the Nutrition Fuels Fitness 5K/10K Run/Walk in Elk Grove. This fun, family oriented event features flat, loop 5K/10K courses, Kids' 1/2 and 1/4 mile fun runs, a health and wellness expo (including registered dietitians) and Family Fun Day activities. All events will start and finish at Elk Grove Regional Park; the 5K/10K will start together at 8:00 a.m. and the Kid's Runs will start at 9:30 a.m. "Nutrition Fuels Fitness" is an exercise and healthy eating strategy promoted by the California Dietetic Association, the founders of this event. Their focus is on childhood obesity, and it's growing alarming rates. Participating in this event will help them raise funds to "Take a Bite out of Childhood Obesity." Proceeds will be donated to grants and programs tackling this issue.

Registration for Nutrition Fuels Fitness is available in the following easy ways:

  • · Online through Thursday, March 25th at: http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1116220
  • · By Mail (must be postmarked by today). Registration forms may be downloaded at www.changeofpace.com.
  • · In-Person at Packet Pick Up at Elk Grove's The Running Zone, on Friday, March 26th, from Noon to 5:00 p.m. The Running Zone is located at 7440 Laguna Blvd. Phone - (916) 478-9663.
  • · Race Morning, 6:30 - 7:45 a.m. (through 9:30 a.m. for the Kid's Runs)

On Sunday, March 28th, come to the West Steps of the State Capitol for the Walk for Recovery 5K. This charity walk provides an opportunity to exercise while raising much needed funds treatment and recovery services. The state economy has negatively affected drug, alcohol and mental health treatment services with reductions in funding by nearly 15%, and another significant cut is expected any time. Walk for Recovery has the potential to offset this deficit. "Together We Can" keep the doors to drug and alcohol treatment programs open. The Olympic countdown Has Begun!

The 2004 Summer Olympic Games are just around the corner and in four short months thousands of athletes from each country will mesmerize the world with their athletic talents and abilities. Here at A Change of Pace, we tend to keep watchful eye on 100 of the world's best olympic distance triathletes competing in for gold in the sport of triathlon. Held in Southern Athens in the Municipality of Vouliagmeni, the swim will take place at one Greece's most famous beaches, Oceanida. The cycling and running courses will feature both mountain and sea views and the run course will be perhaps the most spectator-friendly of all, as it features a 3 loop course. Triathletes will complete the "Olympic" distances of a 1.5K swim (about 0.9 miles), 40K bike (24.8 miles) and 10K run (6.2 miles). The women's triathlon will be held on Wednesday, August 25th, and the men on August 26th.

With all the Olympic excitement, this summer will be an excellent time to experience the sport first hand. Whether you've competed in one already, or if this will be your first, you are bound to love the joy and exhilaration of completing a triathlon, especially in an Olympic year. And, if you don't feel quite ready to try all three disciplines at once, consider forming a relay team with one or two friends. You can split up the swim, bike and run so that each person completes one or two legs.

That being said, A Change of Pace will be organizing three (actually four) triathlons this summer. Each are unique due their distance and location and each is as exciting as the other. They are as follows:

Saturday, July 17th - Donner Lake Sprint Distance Triathlon - 1/4 mile swim, 6 mile bike, 2 mile run
Sunday, July 18th - Donner Lake International Distance Triathlon - 1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run
Sunday, Aug. 15th - Davis Kids Triathlon (Ages 4-14) - Distances range from 25-150 yd swim, 1-4 mile bike, 1/4 - 2 mile run (by age).
Sunday, Aug. 29th - River City Women's Triathlon - 500 yd swim, 11 mile bike, 3 mile run.

While the Donner Lake International Triathlon offers longer distances and a more challenging course, the three other events are excellent triathlons for beginners, while providing a fun and exciting event for more experienced triathletes.
