Davis Stampede’s 33rd Running

DS-LOGO-2015In one month, the iconic Davis Stampede event will take place for the 33rd time. That’s right, this event was established in 1983 back when we were just starting to get a taste of the awesome 80’s while mourning the end of the tv show M.A.S.H.

1983:
– Reagan was President, the Berlin Wall was standing and the Cold War still had 8 more years to go
– Swatch watches were first invented
– Beat It and Flashdance were #1 hits
– Sally Ride traveled to space.

2015:
– Five Presidencies later (four of those two-termed)
– Garmins have long since replaced the swatch
– young artists One Direction and Taylor Swift are at the top of the charts (Taylor was not even born til ’89)
– The space shuttle program has since been discontinued.

The 2005 Race Start on B Street

Over time the Stampede has grown and changed; a Marathon was briefly included and then discontinued, we’ve added 5K and 10K distances, most recently adding Kids Fun Runs in 2000 and a Half Marathon Two-Person Relay in 2014. Early days saw a half marathon route that started and finished at Davis High School and traveled along Covell to J Street, through Downtown, the University, by the Airport and returned via California/Oak Avenue to the high school.

In 1999 we made the decision to find a new home, leaving Davis High School and moving to Central Park in Downtown Davis. Course records at this location are long since unbroken (the most recently being in 2008). The Stampede is an event we have always certified through USA Track and Field, and back before there were “finisher medals” for event, we used (cleaned and painted) actual horseshoes for the age group awards. In 2006, the Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante joined us for the race and ran the 5K.

Over time things have changed – chip timing replaced barcoded tear tags in 2008 – disposable chips replaced shoe chips in 2012 – but the atmosphere has stayed somewhat the same. You can still expect a Packet Pick Up to take place at Fleet Feet Sports in Davis (an event sponsor since the inaugural event).  Considered by many a season opener and a get-in-shape-for-the-New-Year goal event, the Davis Stampede is a longstanding tradition that has seen many trends come and go, while always remaining a calendar favorite.

Come join us for the 33rd running on Sunday, February 8th.
