Davis Turkey Trot 2018 recap

The Davis Turkey Trot took place in December this year – a result of the hazardous air created from smoke and the Camp Fire in Paradise. The event was originally scheduled for Saturday, November 17, 2018, but thick smoke blanketing the Sacramento Valley forced a postponement. When runners and walkers finally did hit the streets, three weeks later on December 8th, the skies were blue and the air was clear.

Several events were offered: a 2 Mile, 5K, 10K, Half Marathon and kids fun runs. Runners could also opt to run both the 5K and 10K and complete the ‘unofficial 15K.’

Proceeds from the event benefited area non profit groups, sports teams, youth organizations, and the Yolo Food Bank.

New Half Marathon Course Record set

Ryan Waddington (pictured to the right) spent Friday afternoon talking with runners and walkers while volunteering at the Davis Turkey Trot packet pick up at Fleet Feet. He’s newly relocated to Davis, CA from Australia and decided to give the half marathon a try.

Less than twelve hours later, his name appeared first overall. Wouldn’t you know it – he had not only won the race but also set a new course record. The new men’s half marathon course record now stands at 1:10:33 (previous record was 1:14:28).

After stopping by the timing tent, we learned Ryan was a professional triathlete. Best of luck in your future running and triathlon endeavors while in the USA, Ryan! Thanks for joining us.

A Tradition Continues

For some, Saturday may have been your inaugural Davis Turkey Trot experience. For others, maybe this year’s event was part of a longstanding tradition.

I had the pleasure of speaking with a participant at Packet Pick Up on Friday whose family has participated in every single Davis Turkey Trot for the last twenty years. Quite a feat! Since their eldest child was born and rode in a stroller, to years of the Turkey Tot fun runs, to the kids growing up and being able to complete the 5K on their own, she told me how every year is a different memory, a tradition in their household.  One year even included completing the 5K with an injured foot and in a boot!

I was glad that the change in date hadn’t hindered their tradition and ability to participate this year, and we are honored to provide a venue that enables the creation of these kind of family traditions.

Thank you to the Golden Valley Harriers

The Golden Valley Harriers are a running club based here in Davis, and for many years now, have assisted us on our half marathon events by providing pace group leaders.

We are so thankful for this support you provide for our half marathon entrants. Three cheers!

Thank you to our Davis Turkey Trot volunteers, sponsors and partners

A very special thanks to our ongoing supporters Greiner Heating/Air and Solar, Thriving Pink, FIT House of Davis, Fleet Feet Sports and our new sponsor, Super Owl Brewing. We hope that you had a moment to enjoy some pink pancakes from Thriving Pink!

And this year, we were pleased to have welcomed the Yolo Food Bank, who continues to support the greater Yolo County region.

Thank you to everyone who brought non perishable food to contribute to the food drive on race day.
