Summertime Events for Active Kids in Northern California

Another summer is upon us, and we’ve compiled a list of athletic-oriented events in and around Northern California that active families and kids can enjoy, making this summer fly on by. 

June

Top Pick:

🌟 June 23 – Davis, CA Positive Energy Kids Triathlon. Open to all kids ages 3 to 15 years. Held in a swim-bike-run format; experience not needed. Entry includes a t-shirt, heavyweight finisher medal, post-race sno-cone and pancakes. Children can enter as individuals or in a parent/child team division. For older siblings and parents: there’s a 5K run or walk taking place before the triathlon, so parents can squeeze in some exercise of their own.
Why we like it: It’s affordable + kids will love the post-race sno cones and pancakes.
Cost: $30-$55, depending on division.

Honorable Mentions:

⭐ June 22 – Elk Grove, CA — Run 4 Hunger. Hosted by the Elk Grove Food Bank, this event offers 5K, 10K and Kids Run options. 

Why we like it: The cause needs year-round support, not just at Thanksgiving

⭐ June 23 – Stanford, CA — Summer Scamper. Various kids fun run divisions for ages 3 to 10; benefits Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. 5K/10K divisions for older kids and adults.

Why we like it: The cause. Lucille Packard’s Children’s Hospital is at the forefront of pediatric care, and right here in Northern California.

: $20-$37, depending on division.

June 16 – Richmond, CA Marina Bay Running Festival. Half marathon, 10K, 5K, Kids Run. More info.


July

Top Pick:

🌟 July 13 – Davis, CA Davis Moonlight Run. Open to all kids ages 12 and Under; half -mile fun run. Includes a finisher ribbon. Race start is at 7:30 p.m. For older siblings and parents, there is a 5K, 10K and Half Marathon.
Why we like it: The fun run is free, plus there’s no early morning alarm.
Cost: Kids Fun Run is FREE; $29 to $60 for other divisions.

Honorable Mentions:

⭐ July 4 – Concord, CA Stars and Stripes Run. Held in Todos Santos Park, this event offers a 5K and free kids run. Stomper the Elephant from the Oakland A’s will be on-site for high-fives, photo op’s and cheers. The event precedes the Concord 4th of July Parade. 

Why we like it: Stomper has a lot of enthusiasm; parades are fun; and it’s free.

: Kids Run is free for 10 and under

⭐ July 14 – Herald, CA — Tri 4 Kids. TBF Racing has a long history of producing family-friendly triathlons that cater to all athletic abilities. If your kids are looking for a more competitive atmosphere, their events won’t disappoint. Adults can also participate in a triathlon, aquabike (swim-bike), aquathlon (swim-run), or swim only.

Why we like it: One of the only kids triathlons with a lake swim; post-race lunch is included.

Top Pick:

🌟 August 17 – Orinda, CA — NorCal Kids Triathlon. Held at Miramonte High School, this kids event is nestled in the treesy hills of Orinda and offers boys and girls ages 4 to 15 the opportunity to participate in a triathlon. Awards for top three boys and girls per division.
Why we like it: It is one of the only kids events this summer in the East Bay
Cost: $40-$50

August 10 – Sacramento, CA – Elizabeth Cady Stanton Free Kids Fun Run.  Held at Glen Hall Park near-ish to Sacramento State.

Why we like it: It’s free + we like the nod to famous historical women

: Kids Run is FREE; 5K is $20-35

⭐ August 24 – Sacramento, CA – Race for the Arts – Kids Fun Run. Benefits arts programs throughout Sacramento. Over 40 hands-on booths. 5K run/walk held for all ages.

Why we like it: Benefits a wide variety of local programs + lots of things to do post-race.
Cost: $15 for kids

August 10-11 – San Mateo, CA Kids Obstacle Challenge. Think mud run, but for kids. Ages 6-15, one or two parents can accompany kids for free. Website

August 11 – Herald, CA Tri for Kids. Ages 5-14. Held at Rancho Seco Park. Website.

August 11 – Oakland, CA Stomper’s Stomp. Ages 2-8. Held in conjunction with the Oaktown Half. Website.
