Breaking down "PV > PR"
With our 13th Annual Lucky Run coming up this Saturday, March 29th, (and the weather is looking perfect, yay!!) we thought it would be a great time to break down the rising concept of celebratingĀ PV’s over PR’s.
ā”ļø What is a PR?: PR, or personal record (aka: PB, or personal best) is a common term in individual sports designating an athlete’s best time at a particular distance, such as running a 5K or swimming a 200yd. Oftentimes, it is used as a measure of performance or success.Ā
ā”ļø What is a PV?: PV is used to describe a personal victory.
š¤ Reframing performance measurement:Ā While achieving a PR is awesome and totally worth celebrating, it can lead to perceived plateaus in performance and the idea that if you’re not achieving PR’s, you aren’t growing or performing at your current best. The reality is, no one is going to PR every time.
There is a parallel concept that is gathering strength, where achieving Personal Victories, or “PV’s,” is given more focus.
Here’s why we like to celebrate PV’s over PR’s:Ā
Just like the Lucky Run was created as a race to celebrate all that we are individually lucky for – whether that is the ability to run or walkš, the arrival of springšŗ, situations that feel like luck is on our sideš, or the joy in gathering with friends š« and the community to support local charities – the PV > PR mindset is geared towards celebrating personal achievements, big and small.Ā
š Personal Victories will look different for everyone.
Did you just:
- complete a month-long exercise streak of getting a workout in 6 days a week?
- try a new fueling technique and nail it?Ā
- pick up exercising again – or stick with it-Ā after enduring a life change like having a baby, starting a new job, moving to a new home, or facing new health condition?
- ‘get back out there’ after taking a break?
- heal from an injury?Ā
- conquer pre-race nerves?Ā
- figure out a better before-race breakfast for your tummy?
Boom! š„³Ā You’ve achieved a Personal Victory.
Celebrating personal victories positively contributes to your mindset as a person and as an athlete, and celebrating your PV’s improves confidence and will keep you going strong. šŖ
If you achieve a PV at the Lucky Run this Saturday – whether it’s big or small – congrats in advance!
We’ll look forward to seeing you post about it on the ‘gram. (Please tag us at @a_change_of_pace)
